Blackhand the Destroyer was a tactical genius whose lust for power made him the perfect pawn for the warlock Gul'dan. He was a Raider in the Sythegore Arm and already well respected for his rule of the Blackrock Clan, so it was very easy to nudge him into the position of Warchief to organize the Horde, with the enigmatic Shadow Council at his back. Under Blackhand's command, the Horde set out to test itself against the simple draenei. (This is according to Rise of the Horde from the History of Warcraft. According to the Warcraft I manual, Blackhand didn't become Warchief until after the Horde lost a battle at Stormwind Keep.)
After the coming to Azeroth, Blackhand led the Horde to multiple victories over the meager human forces of Azeroth. Despite small and petty victories by the human forces, the orcs continued to dominate, and pushed back further and further towards Stormwind Keep. However, in the middle of the first war, while Gul'dan was temporarily incapacitated, Orgrim Doomhammer killed Blackhand to avenge the murder of Durotan, becoming the new Warchief of the Horde. Thus, Blackhand did not live to see the fall of Azeroth at the end of the war.
